Counselling for Individuals
I work with individuals who might feel stuck – stuck in Trauma, Depression, Anxiety, Grief, Addictions, or other ways of coping that just don’t work anymore. It might be from toxic relationships, childhood trauma, or inscribed within our DNA. Regardless of the origin, Relational Psychotherapy helps us find the source of these experiences, and break the patterns and discover new ways of looking at ourselves.
Starting from Where We Are
When Individuals come to see me for therapy, we start where we are.
What’s going on today? What’s life like in your world?
What are you feeling right now? Or maybe where does that feeling show up in your body?
Maybe we don’t know what we are feeling, maybe we need help with naming these powerful motivators that are emotions.
Knowing our feelings, and naming them, helps us stay grounded, and regulated, helps us to not lose our cool, or get frustrated, or impatient, or feel shame. These are all powerful tools into learning about ourselves and ourselves with others.
Emotions are time travellers, a kind of portal key, when we feel something powerful, in us or in others. These emotions can take us back to other times when we felt those same feelings before. Like a long forgotten fragrance, recovered, with a memory. Whether you seek therapy for trauma, depression, anxiety, or just wanting to know yourself more deeply. It’s like going from 2D to 3D, and maybe 4D. We learn to be okay with ambiguity, conflicts, about not needing to know the future, or needing to predict what is in the minds of others in order to direct our own behaviour. That’s too much work.
It’s funny, maybe not so funny, that when people come to therapy for one thing, they find that often the thing they came in for was not the real problem at all.
